More Books Please blog

Reviews of books I've read and books I hope to read. "I was always able to lose myself in reading. Books were a necessary escape I always gladly jumped into headfirst." I love all genres, but will not read horror (I find I like to sleep... a lot! LOL)

Owned: Highest Bidder

Owned: Highest Bidder - Willow Winters, Lauren Landish I volunteered to read an advance copy.

While it was an interesting story and an intriguing synopsis, something was missing for me. It could be because this is the first book I've read in this series. I think the story would have been a little more believable if Lilly wasn't a virgin, but I understand she was. Her naïveté and sassiness was endearing and the soft side of Joseph was lovely. I am intrigued enough to wonder about Zander's story!

Agent

Agent - Dale Ivan Smith This was a difficult review to write... I didn't love the book, but I hate it either. I didn't connect with the characters. I couldn't bring myself to care about the main character. The writing was good, the plot was interesting. The story was just okay for me. This was intriguing enough for me to continue. I look forward to reading more from this author.

Library Jumpers

Library Jumpers - Brenda Drake Imagine being able to visit any library in the world with just a key phrase… pretty cool, right? This becomes a reality for Gia. She doesn’t know she do it until quite possibly the most handsome guy she’s ever seen vanishes. This starts a journey she couldn’t even dream of, but was destined for! One wizard wants total control and revenge, however there’s a prophecy claiming a child born to two Sentinels will be the one to stop him. Is Gia the child of the prophecy? If so, will she be brave enough to stop the horrible wizard?

This was an action packed story that flowed quite well. That being said, there was so much going on that at times it was just too much. The world building was a bit slow, but if you’ve ever been to Boston you will have a few points of references. What I found fascinating was the world building of the mystical world and the magic within it. The bravery of Gia and the sincerity of Arik made this an interesting story. The slow build of their romance was perfect. This is set up to be an amazing series and I can’t wait to follow and see where it leads!

Burdened (A Burdened Novel #1)

Burdened (A Burdened Novel #1) - Peiri Ann Review to come!

Soulmated

Soulmated - Shaila Patel Ms. Shaila Patel is definitely on my radar!

Soulmated grabs you from the very beginning and doesn't let go! Liam is a prince and an empath. His father wants him to solidify a position on the council. The best way to do that? Find the one person you are DESTINED to be with. The problem, it conflicts with what Liam wants and feels.

Lucky has the two options of graduating early and going to the Medical school of her mother's choice or an arranged marriage to a guy of her mother's choice. Neither option are desirable.

Everything changes when Liam moves in next door to Lucky. Their chemistry is off the charts! The interaction between Lucky and Liam is breathtaking. Both have the weight of the world on their shoulders, with impossible options and high expectations from their parents. What are they to do?!

What I loved the most was reading about Lucky's and Liam's cultures. Each culture was rich and beautifully written. I look forward to the next installment!

Puppy Love

Puppy Love - Kelly Moran Welcome to Redwood Ridge where everyone knows everyone and everything about you. Fresh from a divorce, Avery Stowe decided to move her daughter, Hailey, to Oregon to be closer to her mom. She never thought she would meet someone like Dr. Cade O’Grady, one of the local veterinarians who own his practice with his two brothers, Flynn and Drake. They get off to a rocky start due to a misunderstanding, but eventually, they warm to each other. Avery starts to work for the clinic, and she gets a job at the clinic. She’s not accustomed to people being so helpful, especially when it comes to Hailey, who is autistic. Throughout this story, she truly learns the meaning of community.

What I loved most was this wasn’t really an instant love story. It’s funny and charming. You quickly fall in love with all the characters, especially Hailey and the three brothers. The dialogue is great, and quite honestly anyone who can quote “Clue” is my absolute favorite character. This is the first story in the series. It leaves me wanting more, and I have so much to look forward to!

Witch's Sacrifice

Witch's Sacrifice - Crissy Moss There once was a time, if you wanted safe travels by sea, you needed to make a sacrifice. There is a Kraken at the bottom of the ocean who feeds off of magical powers and a power hungry priest who lives to instill fear into the villagers. To keep the villagers in fear, not everyone sacrificed is a magical being. While this is the story of a witch coming into her own and finding love, it’s also a story of what happens when the priest, Alistar, has two enemies and he gives them a common enemy, himself.

Witch’s Sacrifice will leave you wondering what will happen next. There are twists and turns, and people who should be enemies are allies. Ms. Moss creates such a world that you feel like you’re standing by the ocean with the merman, Artiro, listening to the waves crash against the shore as the witch, Marizza silently pleads for him not to go. While it might seem like a lot of pages, there is so much going on that you don’t realize you’ve finished at least 4 chapters in a matter of minutes. I will admit the ending wasn’t what I hoped for, but now I have something to look forward to. I must confess, that has me excited.

Hers to Heal

Hers to Heal - Vonnie Davis Welcome back to Eagle Ridge Ranch, and give a big Texas hello to Reece Browning! Reece is the newest member of ZQ's old team to come to the ranch for recovery after the loss of his arm. After the trauma he endured at the hands of his captors, Reece has taken to not speaking. Gina, his physical therapist, is the polar opposite. She's quite the chatterbox! In the beginning, it looks as though it bugs him that she talks non-stop, but it's really just to get him to open up. He slowly starts to open up, and you get to see what Reece may have been like before becoming a SEAL. As the story progresses, you get the backstory of Gina and Reece. You also meet Gina's daughter, Piper, who is the smartest 6-year-old you will ever meet, and she's looking for a father. While their friendship develops into a relationship, trouble is brewing. Will ZQ and his team be able to step in and avert a crisis, or will they be too late?

I had moments of frustration and moments where I literally laughed out loud. As I relived the traumas with Gina and Reece, I gained a deeper level of appreciation for the men and women in our Armed Forces. It reminds you how real PTSD is and how poorly it's being treated. I thank Ms. Davis for bringing attention to the subject.

I fell in love with the secondary characters. I found Piper to be absolutely adorable. She's reminded me of Bryce's daughter, Colleen, from A Highlander's Passion . I cannot forget Junebug and her love for Jack. It is truly hilarious. I enjoyed getting to know and (slightly) understand Ashley and everything she has been through. I'm not sure whose story I'm more looking forward to, ZQ or JJ. All I know is I can't wait!

Enforcer: Bad Boy Romance

Enforcer: Bad Boy Romance - Selena Black Newly released from prison for an assault that was self defense, Matt wants to turn his life around. It just so happens there's a government funded program to help reform criminals to lower the recidivism rate... (imagine that!) You will receive an apartment, rent free, for 6 months, help with finding a job, and a counselor to talk to and help with all of that.

Brigitte finished her degree in social work and gets a job working for the program and sparks fly between Brigitte and Matt on their first meeting. However, Matt's past catches up to him and it has Brigitte and Matt on the run!

The writing and chemistry was great. There were moments where I didn't understand how Matt was such a great enforcer because he never noticed he was being followed. What I loved was his persona didn't match his reputation. Yeah, he was a bad boy... but he had a heart of gold. His interactions with Brigitte were lovely and sassy. The teasing back and forth was endearing and it let you see the REAL Matt.

The secondary characters were great. They definitely added to the story and kept the Brigitte and Matt on their toes! If there was a sequel to Brigitte and Matt, I would definitely read it! Quick read and recommend it!

Shades of Doon

Shades of Doon - Carey Corp, Lorie Langdon I'm not even sure where to begin! I cannot believe I put this book off for so long! I kept putting this off because I didn't want it to end! Oh, cue the anxiety!

Queen Veronica was ill and Kenna made the decision to stay in Doon at the end of "Destined for Doon". Addie, the witch, is still at it, but she has help... and a disguise. She's extremely close to getting her magic back and taking the throne! Meanwhile, Kenna and Veronica keep popping in and out of Doon unexpectantly! One minute they're in Doon, the next minute they're in modern day America. I think I panicked more than they did... I can't take this! LOL

Enter my favorite scene! Prince Jamie leaves Doon for the first time! Talk about a kid in a candy shop. It was sweet, funny, and I glad it made the cut. But while Queen Veronica, Kenna, Prince Duncan, and Prince Jamie spend a few days trying to get back to Doon and lead the lives of normal teenagers in the meanwhile... Addie has been at work. Can the four get back to Doon in time to stop her before it's too late?

While the book delivered on the mystery, the betrayal, and the humor... it made you think about what will you stand up and fight for. I will admit, I was pretty sure this was the last book in the series, but thank God it's not! I need to know what happens next and I can't wait to find out!

The Fading Dusk (Smoke and Mirrors, #1)

The Fading Dusk (Smoke and Mirrors, #1) - Melissa Giorgio The Fading Dusk was truly a great story! It has everything! There’s espionage, love, humor, lies and murder! Just when you think a street magician is just an ordinary guy… slight of hand, making a coin disappear, well, those days are gone! Meet Bantheir. On the surface, he’s your average street magician just trying to make a living, but if you dig a bit deeper… he’s hiding a deep dark secret! His secret is the ultimate betrayal… especially to Irina, his assistant and “adopted” daughter. Bantheir’s betrayal lands Irina in prison with some unlikely friends, like the charming and attractive Captain Leonid. He too, is not everything he seems. With all the secrets going on, who do you trust?

For me, this was quite the story, it begged me to use my imagination! The Fading Dusk is extremely well written, had me sitting on the edge of my seat and left me wanting more. It was nice to see Irina and Leonid drop their guards and bond. While romance wasn’t a big component to the story, it did help progress the story along. Irina started off meek and shy, but by the end she blossomed! I enjoyed this story and look forward to book 2 of the series!

Shadows of Asphodel (Shadows of Asphodel #1)

Shadows of Asphodel (Shadows of Asphodel #1) - Karen Kincy I had high hopes with this book as I read Clockwork Menagerie first and loved it. It did not disappoint. SHADOWS OF ASPHODEL was action-packed from page 1 and did not let up! One of my weaknesses with heroes is a vulnerable, smart ass. I have that in Wendel! I love a strong heroine! Ardis has moments of me wondering "Why are we going through this?!", but I lived for their interactions.

I will admit, in the beginning I had a hard time connecting with Ardis, but once you get her backstory, everything makes sense and you feel for her. With their troubled pasts, finding each other was the best thing that could happen to Ardis and Wendel. Add in Konstintine and best. story. EVER!

It's a quick read with flawed characters that seek redemption and find love. I recommend to anyone that loves steampunk romance!

Faerie Rift

Faerie Rift - Jae Vogel The rating for this is more like a 3.5 star rating (but Amazon/Goodreads doesn't do that). I found Aria to be a bit much at times. Aria's demeanor at times can be aggressive or gruff when it doesn't need to be. With that being said, she really is kickass and does what needs to be done. I did have a bit of trouble following the story; it was a little difficult to tell who was saying what. I found Erol to be absolutely fascinating. The way he sees the world and human civilization was refreshing. He seemed a bit naive, but sincere. I wasn't a fan of Aria's treatment towards Erol, but that was just her demeanor. She is a warrior after all.

There is a warning in the description that this story is dark and is intended for adults. That warning is there for a reason! A bit of the theme was dark, fascinating! It was a captivating story and I do look forward to where the story goes from here.

*I received a copy for an honest review.

Blowing Smoke

Blowing Smoke - Sean Michael This was an intriguing story. Brin is working for Dragon, who hates being social. He is the personal assistant to Dragon, but also his mate. Brin happens to be running away from a stalker ex-boyfriend… but you don’t really read too much about that storyline. It would have been very interesting to delve into that portion of the story as the character was already introduced. The interactions between Brin and Dragon were endearing and delightful.

It was a quaint story that can be read in under 2 hours that will keep you entertained. My only wish is that it were longer!

Wicked

Wicked - Jennifer L. Armentrout This is a 3.5 for me. I’m a bit torn about this story.(No pun intended as Torn is the name of the next book in the series). This was a bit better than meh, but not outstanding. Ivy is a part of the Order that protects humans against the Fae. Ren is a transfer from Colorado and very mysterious. Together, they must find the person who is betraying the Order to the Fae, who wants to open the gates to come through to the human world. The story takes place in lovely New Orleans. Ms. Armentrout paints a vivid picture of the city. So if you’ve been there, you have huge amounts of references as to every part of town Ivy and Ren travel to.

While the story itself was entertaining, the dialogue was a bit weird. Some of the things Ren would say to Ivy felt a bit awkward because no one speaks that way in normal conversation. So while the dialogue was a bit off-putting, it didn’t stop me from reading the rest of the book. There are a few supporting characters that have the potential to steal the show! My favorite is Tink, who is obsessed with Harry Potter! Tink can have you in stitches!

I can see why there were such rave reviews and 5 star ratings, for me this was just a bit short. It doesn’t stop me from wanting to read Torn. In fact, I look forward to it!

The Forest Feast Gatherings: Simple Vegetarian Menus from My Cabin in the Woods

The Forest Feast Gatherings: Simple Vegetarian Menus from My Cabin in the Woods - Erin Gleeson This is more than just a cookbook! It provides you with ideas and DIYs of place settings while proving great menus. Some of the recipes can easily be made for vegans (THERE'S A VEGAN MENU!!!!!! *fist pump* *pelvic thrust*) Each recipe is easy to make with very little prep time. Highly recommend!
