More Books Please blog

Reviews of books I've read and books I hope to read. "I was always able to lose myself in reading. Books were a necessary escape I always gladly jumped into headfirst." I love all genres, but will not read horror (I find I like to sleep... a lot! LOL)

Dragon School: Initiate

Dragon School: Initiate - Sarah K.L. Wilson Say what now?! Between Sarah K. L. Wilson and Jennifer L. Armentrout, I just can’t… I don’t know what to do with myself. Okay, so Amel passes her first flight with Raolcan; which is great. She saves the life of Savette, another initiate, who was also quite possibly the nicest trainee to Amel, in the process of passing her first flight. However, things are progressing faster than the school wanted and was prepared for. While Amel and other initiates aren’t full Dragon Riders, there’s an “all hands on deck” feel going around the school. Can Amel figure out what’s going on in time to stop it? What are the repercussions of interfering? Can she afford not to interfere? So. Many. Questions!

This was fast-paced and very entertaining! I read this in one sitting; I could not put this down! The writing as great and the story-telling was awesome. Every moment Amel spent with Raolcan showed a true partnership, respect, and loyalty. My only complaint… this story wasn’t long enough! I want… no… I need more! I have to know what happens next!

Dragon School: First Flight

Dragon School: First Flight - Sarah K.L. Wilson This was so much better than I was expecting! Amel is a disabled teen with high ambitions of being a dragon rider, but of course, there are obstacles in her way, such as social class and mobility issues. As you suspect, the other trainees aren't very nice to her. But hey! Who needs nice trainees when you get to choose the dragon you're going to bond with… or in Amel's case... her dragon chose her. Meet Raolcan, a purple and sleek dragon who has bonded with Amel before their first flight.

What I loved about this story is the number of issues it touched on. I think it is well covered and conveyed while being entertaining. Amel is adorable and I love Raolcan. He has such a calming presence to him. The interactions between the two are great. It does end in a bit of a cliff-hanger, but not an "edge of your seat" cliff-hanger. I look forward to the next installment!

Better Off

Better Off - Yesenia Vargas I thought this was an interesting story of a girl from a strict family. I thought the writing was good, but at times it dragged a bit. There were a few moments of predictability. Overall, it was pretty good.

Learning to Live

Learning to Live - Kira Adams If you are looking for a book to break your heart... this is it! It has such tender moments and moments of anger. I loved every moment of this book. It was hard to read this and not cry. The writing was superb and I look forward to seeing where it goes with Ciera and Topher.

Origin

Origin - Jennifer L. Armentrout Wow! Just wow! After one hell of a cliffhanger, things get real very quickly! Katy is with the DOD, and Daemon will do anything to get her back… ANYTHING! This is quite possibly my favorite book in the series. You get dual POV, meet a slew of awesome characters, and one hell of a story! Hold on tight, this one’s gonna be a nail-biter!

As everything is happening, you find out some really disturbing things about what the government is capable of doing. Just when you thought there were only four species inhabiting the planet: Arum, Human, Hybrid, and Luxen, you find out there’s a fifth, Origin. Most disturbing is how they were created. But what makes it interesting is reading the previous three books and realizing where certain characters fall into place. As events unfold, triumphs and betrayals are revealed, can the gang prove they are up to the challenge of what happens next?

As always, the writing is impeccable. Every series has that one book where the tides have changed and in the next book, everything gets serious. Twilight had New Moon and Eclipse. Percy Jackson had Titan’s Curse and Battle of the Labyrinth. Harry Potter had Goblet of Fire and Order of the Phoenix. For the Lux series, the tide changed in Opal and everything is getting very real now! Getting Daemon’s perspective was absolutely awesome! He is hilarious. His interactions with the additional characters were priceless! I am on to the finale of this series!

Abounding Might

Abounding Might - Melissa McShane If the year ended tomorrow, I can confidently say this is a good book to end 2017! Abounding Might is the third book of the Extraordinaires series and I thought it was amazing! There was intrigue, espionage, humor, and romance. Lady Daphne and Captain Fletcher are great characters, with amazing abilities. Lady Daphne is an Extraordinaire Bounder. She can teleport to places without restriction and learns more and more about what she is capable of in this story. Captain Fletcher is a Discerner. He is can detect your true emotions, even when your face says something different. This is what attracted Fletcher to Lady Daphne. Her emotions and her thoughts always match.

This story takes place in India and I love it. The story is amazing, but the culture itself is another great character. I don’t know if there will be another book in this series, but I think this one is my favorite. Lady Daphne doesn’t allow anyone to dictate what she should be and I love that about her, especially given the time period. I loved Captain Fletcher because he let her be who she wanted to be. He didn’t try to change her and he trusted her opinions; which was more than any of her other counterparts could say. If there is another book in the series, I greatly look forward to it. If not, I take great comfort in being able to re-read the entire series all over again!

Shadow Fall

Shadow Fall - Audrey Grey What I loved… it was very reminiscent to The Hunger Games, but with plot twists and turns. There was a lovely romance element that didn't distract from the story. There was a good amount of greek mythology aspect to the book. I love that and it kept me drawn to the story. The world building was spectacular. Riser is quite possibly my favorite character. He's a bit rough around the edges, but who doesn't love a bad boy?

What I didn't love… there were scenes that were too descriptive, which ordinarily isn't a bad thing. It made the book feel like it was dragging. There were also times I felt like some scenes weren't as descriptive as I would have liked. It took a bit of time to get into.

This was a great start to a series and I'm interested to see where it goes from here.

Benediction

Benediction - Kelly Moran I was hoping Nakos would get his own story, and I'm extremely happy he did! The emotional rollercoaster continues as we get to know Nakos and Amy. While it hurt to watch Nakos and his unrequited feelings in the first book, in walked Amy and you just knew this story was going to rip you to shreds. While I enjoy a friend-to-lovers story, they can be tricky. This was well executed by Kelly Moran. What I appreciated was the acknowledgement of Nakos's feelings for Olivia, while re-examining his feelings for Amy. I was hoping for Amy to be a little stronger (who doesn't live a strong heroine?!), but I completely understand. Nakos and Amy deserved happiness, and with "Benediction"that's exactly what they got. In my review of "Redemption", I called it a 'beautiful symphony of emotions that you never want to end '. Well, Ms. Moran is one hell of a conductor.

Blue Bloods

Blue Bloods - Melissa de la Cruz Earlier this year, a few friends of mine and I were having a spirited (yet hilarious) discussion about a particular author and her books. I will admit I was extremely critical of the author, the series, and anyone who thought the series was great, awesome, was in love with it… blah, blah, blah. Needless to say, when the biggest defender of said series recommended Blue Bloods, I was skeptical; praying not to be led astray. Well, I can say with full confidence… my dear friend, she was on the money!

What if vampires were among you? Could you tell? Would you be able to point them out? Would you believe your eyes if you saw something you knew to be impossible actually happen? In New York City, there’s a hip club that everyone who is anyone goes to. There we meet Schuyler, Oliver, and Dylan, three friends who go to THE prestigious private school in the city. By the night’s end, we got ourselves a murder mystery! When a popular girl is found dead outside the club, some cages get rattled. Who’s next? Is a specific group being targeted? Is anyone safe?

Jack knows something’s happening with the bodies popping up over town, but his memory is getting in the way. His twin sister, Mimi, is all about herself and her popularity. Bliss is the new girl from Texas. When she’s not with Mimi, she’s quite likable… and she really likes Dylan; which Mimi does not approve. And everyone is being secretive and cryptic. Just when you think you solved the mystery, you find out you’re not even close! Melissa de la Cruz does describe some things in great detail, which I’m sure can annoy some people, but I like it.

I do look forward to reading more in this series… especially since this book ends with a nice change of scenery. Italy, anyone?

Murder on the Orient Express (Hercule Poirot, #10)

Murder on the Orient Express (Hercule Poirot, #10) - Agatha Christie This was absolutely amazing! Quite possibly my favorite book by Agatha Christie. Soon to be a movie again. Can't wait to see it. The writing is amazing, and each character keeps you guessing. I want to re-read it all over again.

Tracking You

Tracking You - Kelly Moran For years, Gabby has always been the good girl and Flynn's best friend. Both Gabby and Flynn are always passed over, Gabby because she's sweet and innocent; Flynn because he's deaf. Yet, dating each other didn't seem to be an option. But what is awesome is the power of suggestion. Once the thought is put in your mind, it's kinda hard to get out. The Battle Axes are playing matchmakers with some help from Brent and sparks fly!

Flynn has always had a crush on Gabby, but not wanting to lose their friendship he pushed those feelings away. Once Flynn gives in, something amazing happens. They click. They are meant for each other and everyone knows it, but when is the other shoe going to drop? The story of going from friends to dating was nicely done (with a pretty hot love scene!) The insecurities on both sides just grabbed you and refused to let you go. I was almost in tears in quite a few scenes. This may be my favorite book of the series, although I am looking forward to Drake's story. Excuse me, I have to go reread this book!

The Dysfunctional Test

The Dysfunctional Test - Kelly Moran Everyone has a wacky (and sometimes tacky) family, you know, the kind that can frustrate you. This is Camryn’s family. Her sister is getting married and whatever can go wrong in Camryn’s life, absolutely does… in the matter of one day! She loses her apartment, her boyfriend, and her job in a matter of hours. Going home for her sister’s wedding, without a boyfriend, spells disaster. However, Cam’s sister has a solution: find someone who can pass the dysfunctional test. The person they know will pass the test: Troy. Now to just get him on board… Troy has always viewed Camryn’s family as his own. She needs help and he’s willing to do it. Can they convince everyone they are truly in a relationship (even though it’s just a week) without losing their hearts?

This truly a romantic comedy at it’s best. This family has everything. The perfect sister, the mom who thinks you can stand to not eat that… the grandmother who feels her opinions (no matter how crass) should be heard… and the 3-year-old niece who repeats everything she hears. It creates comedy and a huge chance for romance, which Kelly does so well. There were moments where Camryn frustrated me, but I understood where she was coming from. I need this to be turned into a Hallmark movie IMMEDIATELY!!!!

The Official Chase 'N Yur Face Cookbook: Tasty Recipes & Fun Facts To Start Your Food Adventure

The Official Chase 'N Yur Face Cookbook: Tasty Recipes & Fun Facts To Start Your Food Adventure - Chase Bailey This is a such a great and inspiring cookbook and story. The recipes are easy to follow, family friendly, and quite delicious! What's awesome is Chase includes fun facts and alternatives to make the recipes gluten free. (For vegans, you can also make some simple adjustments... but by no means is this a vegan cookbook, nor is it meant to be. There were some recipes I could adjusts and they worked just fine!) Chase is so enthusiastic with his recipes that you can't help but be excited in trying something new. He also finds ways to incorporate veggies into kids' diets. Who doesn't love that?!

He is such an inspiration and entertaining. I encourage everyone to get this cookbook and check out his youtube page!

Proof of Lies

Proof of Lies - Diana Rodriguez Wallach Holy crap! I don’t know where to begin! There’s espionage, conspiracy theories, lies, humor, a little bit of romance, and much more! Anastasia’s life changed in a blink of an eye, the night her parents died. With her sister, Kiera left to raise her, Anastasia is just trying to make it to the age of 18. Kiera throws a party to defuse some stress, and Anastacia’s life changes again. The next morning, Kiera is missing and presumed dead, with only Anastacia believing she’s alive. Time to travel and follow the clues with the help of some friends!

This book takes you all over Italy and the imagery the author paints is so vivid! I truly felt like I was with Anastasia and Marcus trying to figure out the clues to find out where to next! With some unexpected friends along the way, Anastasia has to decide, who exactly can you trust? This story gripped me and did not let go! One aspect of the book I really enjoyed was the last few pages that including the backstory of real life people and events. I would like to get more of Marcus’s story. I guess I’ll have to stay tuned!

It was amazing and I can’t wait to read the next one. Let the journey continue!

TBA (Starflight #2)

TBA (Starflight #2) - Melissa Landers Starfall has everything you can imagine and it’s absolutely thrilling! You have space pirates, the mafia, hundreds of planets… It’s like Doctor Who meets Firefly!

Kane and Cassia are great friends who, at one point, had romantic feelings for each other. They still do, but Cassia refuses to act on them. Who could blame her? There’s a political power struggle going on, with a war on the rise!

While you rooted for Cassia and Kane to come to their senses, romance wasn’t the main story and I loved that. Starfall will take you for a ride that you will never want to get off! It is the second book of the series, however I had no trouble keeping up! It was such a thrill and I’m so glad I got a chance to read this book!
